Utility Pulling Lines are ropes used by electrical utility companies or often utility contractor companies for pulling utility transmission wires through blocks and into place on transmission towers. The ropes are fed through the blocks on the towers and attached to the end of the wires which are then pulled into place by large winches. Pulling lines are often sold in multiples of 4 or 6 units at a time depending on the number of wires being pulled. The ropes are ordered coated with different colors so they can be easily identified. The best choice for this application are Plasma® or Spectra® ropes. Benefits of these high-performance fiber constructions are:
High strength
Abrasion resistance
Low stretch
Ease of splicing in the field
Stays round and firm around blocks and sheaves
Available with urethane coatings in a variety of colors
Torque free
Below is a comprehensive list of all our strength members suitable for Utility Pulling Lines, or reference our Utility Products flyer. These detail the construction types we use and their relative strengths and applications. A datasheet for each rope construction listed below is available here or in our resources and downloads section.
Plasma® 12 strand is the highest strength synthetic rope available. Plasma® 12 strand is manufactured from High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) that has been enhanced by Cortland’s patented recrystallization process.
Plasma® 12 strand is delivered standard with a polyurethane finish and is easily spliced using a simple lockstitch type splice, 4-3-2 or 5-4-3 tuck splice. It’s soft, torque free braided construction provides easy handling.
Plasma® 12×12 is a 12-strand braided rope in which each of the 12 strands is, in turn, a 12-strand rope, or braided primary strand. Plasma is manufactured from High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) that has been enhanced by Cortland’s patented recrystallization process.
This patented construction addresses the most critical properties of the fibers to provide a very high strength translation efficiency for larger ropes. This design allows for long lay lengths, making rope that is more flexible for bending applications, easy to inspect and can be quickly spliced using standard 12 strand splicing techniques. Plasma 12×12 is supplied with our standard polyurethane finish, although other coatings can be applied to suit specific applications.
Spectra® 12 Strand provides very high strength, low stretch and excellent abrasion resistance in a single braid construction. Pound for pound, it is over 3 times as strong as polyester and has less than one half the elongation. Spectra® 12 Strand is easily spliced using a simple lockstitch type splice or 5-4-3 Tuck splice, and its soft, torque free braided construction provides easy handling. Spectra® 12 Strand is supplied with our standard polyurethane finish, although other coatings can be applied to suit specific applications.
12×12 Construction is designed specifically for high modulus, high strength fibers such as Spectra® , Plasma® enhanced Spectra® , and Vectran® . This patented construction addresses the most critical properties of the fibers to provide a very high strength translation efficiency for larger ropes. This design allows for long lay lengths making the rope more flexible for bending applications and a rope that is easy to inspect and can be quickly spliced using standard 12 strand splicing techniques. Spectra® 12×12 is a 12-strand single braided rope in which each of the 12 strands is, in turn, a 12-strand rope, or braided primary strand. Spectra® 12×12 is supplied with our standard polyurethane finish although other coatings can be applied to suit specific applications.
Vectran® 12 Strand braided rope has good temperature, abrasion, tension- tension, and flex fatigue resistance as well as negligible creep. Vectran® 12 Strand braids are easily spliced and the soft, torque free braided construction provides ease of handling. It is available with a polyurethane coating finish and is available in black or a choice of custom colors. Other coatings can be applied to suit specific applications.
Vectran® 12 strand and 12×12 is high strength very low stretch braided rope manufactured using Vectran LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer) high modulus synthetic fiber yarns. This torque-free rope is popular in applications when strength, low strech, heat resistance and zero creep in fiber are required. Vectran 12 strand and 12×12 has excellent bend and flex fatigue resistance and is easily spliced using the lock-stitch type splice, 4-3-2 or 5-4-3 tuck splice.
Vectran 12 strand and 12×12 rope is typically provided with a clear polyurethane coating. Cortland’s patented 12×12 construction is available on Vectran braided rope from 1-1/2″ (36 mm) diameter through 8-1/4″ (200 mm) diameter, for strengths and weights above 4″ diameter please contact Cortland.
Technora® 12 Strand is made with high strength light weight Technora® fiber. The 12 strand braided construction is torque free and easy to splice. Technora® 12 Strand is extremely heat and flex fatigue resistant. It also has very little creep, making it a good choice for applications with high static loads including mooring cables, hoisting cables, and tower guy wires. Technora® 12 Strand is available with a standard black polyurethane coating.
Polyester Double Braid provides an excellent combination of high strength, low stretch, excellent weathering resistance, and easy handling. The standard color for Polyester Double Braid is white; however, this construction can also be produced in a variety of colors using solution-dyed polyester in the jacket braid for lasting color and a good hand.
Polyester 12-Plait provides high strength, low stretch and excellent abrasion resistance in a unique single braid construction. This construction is easily spliced using a standard tuck splice and is 30% stronger than 3 strand or 8 plait polyester. Its torque free braided construction provides easy handling and prevents kinks and hockles. Polyester 12-Plait comes standard with an overlay marine finish and is available on special order with a spliceable polyurethane finish in clear or in a choice of colors.
D/S Composite is a double braided rope with the inner core made of High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE)Â and the outer sleeve of polyester. D/S Composite has very low elongation, high strength and the feel and handling of polyester double braid. It is identified with two external black markers.Â
D/S Composite is delivered standard with an overlay marine finish and is available on special order with a spliceable polyurethane finish in clear or any of six colors.
D/T Composite Double Braided rope has an inner core made of Plasma® and the outer sleeve is made of polyester. D/T Composite has very low elongation, high strength, and the feel and handling of polyester double braid. D/T Composite Double Braid is available in standard white or a choice of custom colors.
When the application is highly dynamic, Cortland VS Grips, manufactured with Vectran* fibers, are the best choice in Cable Grips. Vectran* fibers have superior abrasion resistance and excellent dynamic loading durability. Cortland VS Grips have the same strength ratings as the Cortland TS Grips.
